Nebraska turkey season dates for 2027 fall about two weeks later than they did in 2026. Nebraska’s spring turkey season runs from early April through May 31, with three separate openers: archery first, youth shotgun a week later, then regular shotgun. Nebraska Game and Parks approved the new opening-date rules at its June 12, 2026 commission meeting. A nonresident spring permit costs $158, nonresidents are capped at 10,000 permits statewide, and every hunter may hold two permits for the spring season.
Nebraska’s 2027 spring turkey season opens April 10 for archery, April 17 for youth shotgun, and April 24 for regular shotgun. All three segments close May 31, 2027. Those dates come from the rule Game and Parks adopted in June 2026, which sets each opener as the Saturday closest to a fixed calendar date rather than a fixed day of the month.

Archery hunters lose the most. In 2026 an archer could be in the timber on March 25. In 2027 that same hunter waits until April 10, which lands the whole season inside a tighter six-week window.
Game and Parks moved all three spring openers back at its June 12, 2026 meeting in North Platte. The new rules read:
The commission’s stated reason is nesting success. Delaying harvest at the front of the season reduces the odds that early hunting pressure disrupts breeding and nesting, which is where Nebraska’s turkey population problems start.
One thing that did not change: the personal permit limit. Commissioners considered cutting nonresidents from two spring permits down to one and left it at two.
A nonresident Nebraska spring turkey permit costs $158. Resident permits run $34, and youth permits cost $8.50.

Two spring permits is the personal limit for every hunter, and each permit covers one male or bearded female turkey. The fall limit is one permit per person. A youth permit costs $8.50 whether the young hunter is a resident or a nonresident, which is the single best deal in Nebraska hunting.
Big game hunters in Nebraska, turkey hunters included, also need a Nebraska Habitat Stamp, with limited exceptions.
Each Nebraska spring turkey permit is good for one male or bearded female turkey, and a hunter may hold two spring permits. That puts the spring ceiling at two birds. You may take only one turkey per calendar day, so a two-bird spring is a two-day minimum no matter how good the hunting gets.
Shooting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset, and it is unlawful to take a turkey perched in a tree before sunrise.

Nebraska’s fall turkey season runs October 1 through November 30. Fall rules are tighter than spring: one permit per hunter, one turkey of either sex, and no nonresident cap. Archery and shotgun run concurrently, and there is a fall youth season on the same dates.
Fall turkey hunters must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange on head, chest, and back during the November firearm deer season.
Nebraska spring turkey permits went on sale January 12, 2026 at 1 p.m. Central for the 2026 season, and Game and Parks has used a January on-sale date in recent years. Expect a comparable mid-January date for 2027 and watch the Game and Parks permit page in the first week of January.
Nonresidents should treat that on-sale date as a hard deadline rather than an opening bell. Only 10,000 nonresident spring permits exist, and they have sold out well before the season in recent years.
Nonresident spring turkey permits in Nebraska are sold first-come, first-served, not drawn. There is no application, no lottery, and no preference-point system. You buy online when sales open, and when the 10,000-permit cap fills, sales stop.
That structure rewards planning. Hunters who book a guided spring hunt in the fall have their dates locked before permits go on sale, so all they have to do in January is buy.
Nebraska holds more than 1 million acres of publicly accessible hunting land, and the Pine Ridge country in the northwest corner is the best-known public turkey ground in the state. It is also the most hunted. Public Pine Ridge birds get called to by hundreds of hunters across a six-week season, and they get quiet fast.

Most Nebraska turkeys are hybrids. Game and Parks describes the state’s dominant bird as a hybrid Merriam that crossed with a game-farm variety, and says turkeys in the panhandle and the Niobrara River valley show Merriam plumage characteristics most consistently. Wild turkeys were reintroduced in the Pine Ridge in 1959 with just 28 Merriam birds released, and they spread across the state from there.

The South Dakota Black Hills spring turkey season ran April 25 through May 31 in 2026, and the opener falls on the last Saturday in April, which projects 2027 to April 24. South Dakota runs a separate Nonresident Spring Black Hills season with its own application window: January 21 through February 11 for the 2026 season.
That February deadline is the part that catches people. Nonresidents apply and draw for a Black Hills tag rather than buying one over the counter. South Dakota’s prairie season runs earlier, April 11 through May 31 in 2026, with a January 14 through February 11 application window.
